The best way to track golf pool live scores is whatever lets your players answer "where am I?" without texting you. If you're refreshing PGA.com on your laptop while the leaders are on the 18th and three group chats want updates, the system has failed — no matter how clever your spreadsheet was on Wednesday.
Thursday is fine. Friday is where commissioners quit.
Manual tracking works until the cut. Then you need to apply missed-cut penalties across every lineup at once, the leaders change every few minutes on Sunday, and one wrong formula cell turns into a forty-minute debug session while everyone waits.
IMPORTHTML tricks in Google Sheets are impressive right up until ESPN changes a page layout or you hit a rate limit at the worst possible moment.
What actually works
A dedicated pool app is the answer for most groups. Create the pool once. Standings update from tournament data. Players check a link on their phone. You go back to being a spectator.
The Money List runs live to-par standings for friends pools — missed-cut penalties, best-four logic, tie ordering. You set the rules when you create the pool. The feed does the arithmetic.
For six friends and one major a year, the official PGA leaderboard plus a shared sheet you update a few times on Sunday is viable. It doesn't scale past that.
Scripted sheets pulling live HTML are a science project, not a production system for twenty coworkers who need accurate numbers at 6 p.m. Sunday.
Set expectations on "live"
Every few minutes: app territory. End of each round: acceptable for a low-stakes friend pool if everyone agrees going in. Once Sunday night: that's not live, that's homework.
If the leaderboard is ugly on a phone, nobody checks it after Round 1. Test on cellular before you send the link.
Friday is a trust test
The cut is when pool math gets painful. Automated systems apply your missed-cut penalty the same way for everyone. Manual systems apply it whenever the commissioner remembers. That's the difference between "got it" and "I swear the sheet is right."
When you're the commissioner, the scorekeeper, and in second place, skepticism is inevitable. A neutral board — or at minimum a formula everyone can inspect — saves friendships.
